In short

Edinburgh

Edinburgh is stacked rather than spread: a medieval Old Town ridge facing a Georgian New Town grid, with a castle on an extinct volcano between them. Climb Arthur's Seat before breakfast and the whole city fits in one view, hills to firth.

In August the city becomes host to the world's largest arts festival. The other eleven months it settles back into bookshops, closes and howffs — the word alone is worth the trip.

Why people might travel there

A castle on a volcano, a festival in every doorway.

The North Sea neighbour Norwegians keep crossing to visit — history, hills and a direct sea-lane of cultural traffic worth studying properly in the air.

August is festival season and the city fills to the brim. December brings Hogmanay, a new year celebrated like a national sport. Spring and autumn are quieter, cheaper and arguably the city at its best.

This is what makes the place interesting. It is not a sign that Vandrer has selected it.
