In short

Bangkok

Bangkok lies in the delta of the Chao Phraya, which winds south through the city to reach the Gulf of Thailand about 25 kilometres below the centre. King Rama I made it his capital on 21 April 1782, moving the court across the river from Thonburi and beginning the Grand Palace that May; work on the Temple of the Emerald Buddha followed the next year. Thais call the city Krung Thep Maha Nakhon, the opening of a ceremonial name that Guinness lists as the longest place name in the world.

Much of the ground was once swamp, drained by canals that earned the nineteenth-century city the nickname ‘Venice of the East’. Today well over eight million people live in the city proper and more than 17 million in the metropolitan region, and the river remains the clearest way to read it.

Why people might travel there

A river capital founded in 1782, still best read from the water.

Bangkok is about 8,700 kilometres from Oslo, south-east across the whole of Asia. It is in the catalogue as the mainland Southeast Asian destination: a river city with a continuous royal and religious tradition, and a natural entry point to the region around it.

Tropical and hot year-round, in three seasons: a hot season from mid-February, with April the warmest month; a rainy season from the arrival of the south-west monsoon around mid-May until October, with September the wettest month; and a cooler, drier spell under the north-east monsoon from November to February.

This is what makes the place interesting. It is not a sign that Vandrer has selected it.
