Kurz gefasst

Vancouver

Vancouver stands on the unceded territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) peoples, who have lived around Burrard Inlet for thousands of years. The city takes its name from George Vancouver, who explored the inlet in 1792, and was incorporated on 6 April 1886, a year before the first transcontinental train pulled in. The 2021 census counted 662,000 people in the city and 2.6 million across Metro Vancouver.

What sets it apart is the setting: the North Shore Mountains rising directly behind the harbour, a coast that was originally temperate rainforest, and Stanley Park — 405 hectares of that forest, about half a million trees, opened in 1888 on a peninsula beside downtown. The port is Canada's largest, and in 2010 the city and Whistler, 125 kilometres north, hosted the Winter Olympics.

Warum Menschen dorthin reisen könnten

Eine Pazifikstadt zwischen Regenwald und Meer.

Vancouver is about 7,200 kilometres from Oslo — the same distance as Nairobi, in the opposite direction, along a great circle that runs over Greenland and the Canadian Arctic. It is in the catalogue as the North American Pacific destination: a coastal city whose mountains and rainforest feel closer to Norway's own geography than the distance would suggest.

Oceanic and mild: winters are among the gentlest of any major Canadian city, but wet — most days from November to March see some rain, and downtown records about 1,600 mm a year. Summers are typically dry and warm.

Das ist es, was den Ort interessant macht. Es ist kein Zeichen dafür, dass Vandrer ihn ausgewählt hat.
