New York
New York began as New Amsterdam, a Dutch fort on the southern tip of Manhattan begun in 1625, and took its present name in 1664 in honour of the Duke of York. Its five boroughs — Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island — counted 8.8 million people at the 2020 census, speaking an estimated 800 languages. In the harbour stands the Statue of Liberty, France's gift for the centenary of American independence, inaugurated in 1886 and a World Heritage site since 1984.
For Norwegians the city carries a particular date. On 9 October 1825 the sloop Restauration, out of Stavanger with 52 people aboard, arrived here after three months at sea — the beginning of organised Norwegian emigration to America. The city also holds the headquarters of the United Nations and, in the middle of Manhattan, the 843 acres of Central Park, opened in 1858 as the first major landscaped public park in the United States.

New York lies about 5,900 kilometres west of Oslo across the North Atlantic, and carries a long Norwegian history. It is here because a transatlantic link is the most basic test of any long-range idea, and because the crossing itself retraces a route Norwegians have made for two hundred years.
Humid subtropical with real winters: January averages around 0 °C and brings snow, July around 25 °C and humid. Spring and autumn are the temperate months, and the autumn colour in the parks is a season in itself.
