Seoul
Seoul has been Korea's capital since 1394, when Yi Seong-gye, founder of the Joseon dynasty, laid out a new city on the Han River; Gyeongbokgung palace was finished the following year. Of the dynasty's five grand palaces, Changdeokgung, with its secluded rear garden, was listed by UNESCO in 1997, and Jongmyo, the shrine holding the spirit tablets of the Joseon kings, in 1995 — rites with music and dance are still performed there. It was here in the 1440s that King Sejong's court introduced hangul, the Korean alphabet.
Today the city proper holds about 9.6 million people and the wider capital area around 26 million, divided north and south by the Han. On its northern edge rise the granite peaks of Bukhansan, 836 metres, the highest point in the city. Seoul hosted the Summer Olympics in 1988.

Seoul is roughly 7,700 kilometres from Oslo — closer than Tokyo, and reached along a similar northern arc. It is in the catalogue as a second, distinct North-East Asian destination: a very old capital that has become one of the region's largest metropolitan areas within living memory.
Four sharp seasons. Winters are cold and dry under the Siberian high, with January nights around −5 °C; summers are hot and humid, with the jangma rains from late June through July and nearly two-thirds of the year's rain falling from June to August. October is the clear, cool transition month.
