Tokyo
Tokyo lies at the head of Tokyo Bay on the central coast of Honshu. It rose to prominence in 1603 as Edo, seat of the Tokugawa shogunate, and took its present name in 1868 when the Emperor moved his court here and it became the capital of Japan. Today the Tokyo Metropolis counts about 14.3 million people across twenty-three special wards, the Tama hills to the west and a scattering of Pacific islands.
It is a city that has rebuilt itself more than once — after the Great Kantō earthquake of 1923, after the war — and that opened the world's first dedicated high-speed railway, the Shinkansen to Osaka, in 1964, the year it first hosted the Olympics. On clear days the cone of Fuji stands on the western horizon: 3,776 metres, a World Heritage site since 2013, and still the mountain the city measures itself against.
