Nairobi
Nairobi began in 1899 as a depot on the railway being pushed inland from Mombasa towards Lake Victoria; the name comes from a Maasai expression meaning ‘cool waters’. It became the capital of the East Africa Protectorate in 1905 and of independent Kenya in 1963. Sitting around 1,700 metres above sea level, just south of the equator, it has a climate the altitude keeps mild all year, and a population that passed 4.4 million at the 2019 census.
Its defining oddity is Nairobi National Park: 117 square kilometres of savannah opened in 1946 — Kenya's first national park — about seven kilometres from the city centre, where lion, black rhino and giraffe graze against a skyline of office towers. The city is also the only United Nations headquarters in Africa, home to both UNEP and UN-Habitat.

Nairobi is East Africa's institutional hub and the gateway to the Kenyan highlands and the Rift Valley, about 7,200 kilometres south-south-east of Oslo — a journey that crosses the equator itself. It belongs in an expedition catalogue because so much of the region opens from here.
Two rainy seasons: the ‘long rains’ from around March to May and the ‘short rains’ from October to December. June to September is cooler and often overcast; December to March is the sunniest and warmest stretch. Temperatures at this altitude mostly sit between about 9 and 27 °C.
